Chaturangapattinam - A temple by sea shore

Malai mandala Perumal - Sri perundevi thayar samedha Varadharaja Perumal
That was an cool sunday(yesterday) vey amicable and lovely to travel. I am excited at the very moment of a call from my cousin who invited me for chaturangapattinam. The name itself sounds a grandeur and yes the perumal out there is also very grand in fashion and as charm as a child. As popularly known as SADRAS(name given by the Dutch) who used this place as their port, this small beautiful village is just about 27 kms from chengalpattu.
Really the place took my memories back to Srirangam where our namperumal would camp himself in some mandapam amidst the thoppu(garden) and would start in a vahanam in the evening during the pangui and chitirai utsavams.
This temple is simply beautiful with calmness around everywhere. One can hear the language of the nature. Just a half a km away from the sea the perumal here stands majestically. Some facts about this temple......
1. Perumal Thirunamam- Malai mandala perumal - Varadarajan . Thayar - Perundevi Thayar. Perumal is seen with Sridevi & Bhoomidevi in standing posture.
2. Perumal is slightly above the surface level. Once said to be on the hill.
3. Perumal's oru Thiruvadi(left) is slightly in front ready to go - He is said to have given Gajendra Motsham hence this posture.
4. Perumal & Thayar are Syambu from the earth.
5. Skethrathipathi is Lakshmi Narayanan is said to have given space for varadhan and he sits just outside the Sanctum Sanctorum. This is the same as Tirupathi where Varahar is the owner and Our lord srinivasa is just a tenant.
6. Periya Thiruvadi(garudan) is in front and he has 8 snakes on his body and hence this sthalam is said to be a raghu sthalam.
7.The Nelaipadi(gate) of the Sanctum Sanctorum has Yoga Nrisimhar which is a rare sight. One can find Lakshmi or Krishnan in temples.
8. ne interesting fact is that the Masi makam festival(Theertha vari) is being celeberated by(donors) the local fishermen community.
9. The Chakram of Perumal is slightly on the lowerside than Sangu. It is ready for Gajendra Moksham.
10. Swami Raghavendrar is said to have done Puspa Kaikaryam to this perumal.
11. Boothathazhvar is said to have visited the temple daily while he was staying here.
12. One more interesting part is the small Anjaneyar in this temple. Everybody would have seen a picture of Anjaneyar in standing posture with his tail up with greenish thirumeni(body). This photo will be available in almost all the houses for which people use to keep sandhana pottu. The person who drew this anjaneyar refused to publish it till he found him in any temple. This Anjaneyar is here. Simply Beautiful with his hair completly dressed, showing pushpanjali in his hands(nails are very distinct). It is said that only after seeing this anjaneyar in 1971 he published his work to the public.
13. The temple is around 2500 years old. The main door of the temple itself is around 403 years old.
14. One more interesting thing about this temple is that this perumal is so Varaprasadhi(boon provider). Just by praying to him to give the first invitation of your wedding he sees to that the wedding is completed sucessfully.Bhattachariar showed some dozens of wedding invitations at the lords feet.
A beautiful temple and very charming perumal... Nature everywhere... sea nearby... simply superb... A must see temple....

How to Reach?
Though we travelled via Chengalpattu it is better to go by ECR. This place is about 12 kms from Mahabalipuram when u start from chennai on the Chennai-Pondicherry route. After 12 kms from Mahabalipuram you need to take a left and go inside....

Dear Mr. Balaji,

Fantastic and great blog on one of my favorite God from Sadras.

I have also visited this temple many a times and wanted to make him famous. To add on to your description, it is Ashta Naga Garudan in front of the Lord. And the New Lakshmi Narasimhar on the entrance wall is like a one more Jewel in the Crown.

Another interseting information mentioned by the Bhatachariar was that, durig Tsunami this portion of the Land on the Beach Side was not affected by the waves.

People coming from Madras can also take a Public Transport from Koyambedu or Thiruvanmiyur to reach this place. The Bus number if I am correct is 181. Theer are also buses from Chegulpet and Tambaram side.

The most serence and Holy Temple at the reach............

God Bless you for this blog and information on Him
